Overview

The Adtran SDX 8000 Series of access and aggregation switches applies open and programmable SDN architectures for scaling data centers. These differentiated attributes enable our Software-Defined Access (SD-Access) architectures to achieve the massive scalability required to support the uncertain demand of emerging differentiated broadband services and supports the consolidation of SLA-based enterprise and backhaul services.

Horizontal scalability and mesh network resiliency

Access and aggregation switches support advanced switching architectures that are highly scalable and resilient. The SDX 8000 Series supports horizontal scalability (scaling out versus up), which allows the operator to add capacity on the fly. Mesh switching provides multiple paths for each network element, creating a highly fault-tolerant network. These switches can be deployed as a spine, top-of-rack leaf switch, or middle-of-row leaf switch to interconnect computing and storage functions with aggregate fiber-to-the-premises, Carrier Ethernet access, and aggregation components.

Multi-market, multi-service consolidation

These switches are an integral part of a next-generation access solution, supporting the consolidation of 1, 10 and 100Gbit/s services across multiple market segments. Residential broadband, mobile backhaul/fronthaul, enterprise networking, and cloud connectivity services can be simultaneously deployed on a common architecture due to their comprehensive feature set and enormous scale. Operators can offer broadband video from multiple video content providers via unicast and multicast, IPTV, and over-the-top (OTT) deployment models. Deliver SLA-based enterprise and mobile backhaul and fronthaul services through Carrier Ethernet, Ethernet OAM, and performance monitoring, as well as support for stringent network timing distribution and synchronization.

The SDX Aggregation Suite

The SDX Aggregation Suite is a collection of optimized, flexible software that enables advanced carrier-grade features on bare- metal switches. Adtran’s SDX Aggregation Suite is built upon Open Network Linux (ONL), which provides an industry-standard, open platform. We then harness the power of containerization to apply open, programmable SDN models and data center scaling principles.

Open, SDN-programmable architecture

These switches support open interfaces and open APIs from vendor-neutral SDN controllers helping operators avoid vendor-specific component and process lock-in that leads to long release schedules that stifle the agility of in-house DevOps teams. They support multiple Linux-based network operating systems and offer NETCONF/YANG APIs for SDN programmability.

Overview

The Adtran SDX 6000 Series of software-defined access (SD-Access) OLTs consists of open and disaggregated access devices that support a broad range of PON standards, including 10G Combo PON, XGS-PON, and GPON. These devices are built using modern design principles and apply lessons learned from data center networks. This approach is an architectural shift from previous networks that have historically relied on closed, monolithic systems managed by vendor-specific management systems. This evolution enables operators to vastly lower their costs to build, operate, innovate, and grow their networks.

Open, Programmable, Scalable

Built around an open architecture, the SDX 6000 Series of OLTs can be aggregated by any high-density aggregation system, including the SDX 8000 Series of Nx100G next-generation aggregation switches. From a programmability perspective, these OLTs have open APIs that utilize standard NETCONF/YANG interfaces for all management functions, easing the integration into an SDN-controlled environment. For scalability, they are built around a pay-as-you-grow architecture where service providers simply add GPON/10G PON OLTs as needed without the upfront investment or the system constraints of a big, iron chassis system. In addition to being open, programmable, and scalable, all embedded software functions in the OLT, including ONU management and PON provisioning, are virtualized and can be hosted on an external server to enable massive scalability and avoid the system constraints of embedded processing systems. SDX 6000 Series OLTs offer all the carrier-class features (i.e., ONU management, clocking, VLAN tag manipulation, resiliency, etc.) of traditional chassis-based OLT systems but with more flexibility and scalability and an open architecture that cannot be matched by a closed, vendor-specific chassis system.

Open, SDN-Programmable Architecture

The SDX 6000 Series is complemented by the Mosaic Software Suite, which offers a modern management system with full FCAPS functionality and an intuitive GUI for device configuration and service activation. Open, standards-based northbound APIs simplify integration into existing IT/OSS systems enabling automation of network and service management and easing the migration to SDN-based orchestration and management systems.

Overview

The Adtran SDX 630 Series of XGS-PON Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) are designed to address the market with industry-leading voice, data, and video capabilities. Service providers will benefit from the high data rates of fiber optic transmission and the flexibility offered by Adtran’s portfolio of Ethernet-based technology. In addition, these solutions upport demanding residential and business Gigabit services, cloud services, and remote work. Expanding network capability requires next-generation 10G architectures. These architectures offer the capacity and scale to economically support Gigabit and multigigabit service demand well into the future. The SDX 630 XGS-PON SFP+ ONT is a complete ONT in a small form-factor pluggable (SFP) package. It supports high-bandwidth applications by plugging the module directly into a network device, which extends XGS-PON deployments into existing access networks or customer premises equipment. One advantage of this unobtrusive design includes the reduction of space since there is no need for a separate power supply or extra cabling typically included with an external ONT. At less than 3 W per SFP+ ONT, lower power consumption is another significant advantage to consider. All of these advantages give service providers a low-cost alternative for point-to-multipoint (P2MP), fiber-to-the-home (FTTH), fiber-to-the-building (FTTB), or fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC) applications.

SDN-Ready Solution

Additionally, the operational cost and complexity of connecting an FTTP subscriber can be further reduced to accelerate the expansion of Gigabit or multigigabit broadband services.

Adtran 630 Series ONTs support provisioning through modern, open APIs, facilitating deployment in next-generation, SDN-based management systems. This, in concert with accelerated mass-market electronics and optics pricing, ensures that cost-sensitive residential broadband will be viable via 10G PON technologies.

630 Series ONTs also support OMCI provisioning, bridging the gap between current and next-gen software-defined access (SD-Access) networks. The SDX 630 works in concert with Mosaic One, Adtran’s intelligent Software as a Service (SaaS) management suite. Mosaic One helps to accelerate the expansion of Gigabit broadband services through zero-touch service activation and unmatched network analytics and visibility.

Experience the benefits of end-to-end network management with Mosaic One and deliver an exceptional subscriber experience.
